Compendio y filosofía y destreza de las armas reducido a su simplicidad

With great joy we bring this work to light, after a long process of research and editing. The history of this work would deserve its own story due to how laborious and intricate it has been, even without clarifying its whereabouts for a good number of years. The first record we have of this work are some tracings on onion skin paper currently found in the Corble collection at the Library of the University of Leuven. These drawings exclusively reproduce the illustrations. We do not know when or why they were made, although we can assume from the paper’s watermarks that it was during the late 19th or early 20th century. We can also assume the purpose was to show the contents of the book, perhaps as a form of commercial promotion, or due to the interest of an aficionado. When we were finally able to access the original thanks to the invaluable generosity of Roberto Gotti, we still did not know the whereabouts of this work until its acquisition for the Martial Arts Museum of Botticino. The importance of this work is also remarkable: the abundance and detail of the illustrations are not frequent in Destreza texts; the section dedicated to commenting on the vulgar techniques (tretas vulgares) is also significant, not to mention the influences of other Masters (Pacheco and Thibault). In short, it is a text from a period in which the Pachequista preeminence was already established, but with some glimpses showing that it was not a monolithic block, containing some opinions that did not entirely coincide with official doctrines.
