A Compendium of the Philosophy and Skill of Weapons, Reduced to Its Simplest Form

35,00 €

It is with great joy that we present this work, following a long process of research and editing. The history of this work deserves its own account, given how laborious and intricate it was—even without clarifying its whereabouts for a good number of years. The earliest evidence we have of this work consists of some tracings on tracing paper that are currently in the Corble Collection at the University of Leuven Library. These drawings reproduce the illustrations exclusively. We do not know when or why they were made, although we can surmise, based on the watermarks on the paper, that it was during the late 19th or early 20th century; and we can assume that their purpose was to showcase the book’s contents, perhaps as a form of commercial promotion, or out of the interest of some enthusiast. When we were finally able to access the original, thanks to Roberto Gotti’s invaluable generosity, we still did not know the whereabouts of this work until it was acquired by the Botticino Museum of Martial Arts. The importance of this work is also noteworthy: the abundance and detail of the illustrations are uncommon in texts on fencing; the section devoted to commenting on common misconceptions is also significant, not to mention the influences of other masters (Pacheco and Thibault). In short, this is a text from a period when Pacheco’s dominance was already well established, but with some indications that it was not a monolithic bloc, as some opinions did not fully align with official doctrines.
